Splish splash, they were taking a bath
These feathery friends are a bit different to my usual photo subjects, but I wanted to share them anyway.
The first set of photos were taken out the front of our house when I had the sprinkler watering the garden under our big trees. These pretty birdies were having a great time having a shower and a play in the water. They were a bit camera shy and didn't let me get too close, but the photos still turned out not too bad. It's times like this I would love a 400mm lens! But the 200mm is better than nothing.
The second set I took from standing in our front doorway. The happy jacks (or aposlebirds, lousy jacks or grey jumpers as you might know them as) really aren't the prettiest birds in the world, nor do they sound the sweetest, but I still love watching them. Because the bird bath on our front verandah is very exposed, there are only three or four types of birds who we see use it, and most fly away as soon as they see movement near the window or door (and with a pair of 3-year-olds in the house, it's very hard to be sneaky!). The happy jacks, however, are quite placid and don't mind having spectators.
I have visions for photos of the birds playing in the bird bath with the sun setting behind them, but these will have to do for now.
I love having bird life around and I'm so glad we can provide water for them on the hot days we've been having!
